Today’s model looks more like a Ferris wheel than a classic pyramid. The corporate function is small and at the center of the model. Consider it golf ball size. Moving out from the center and connected to the center and the size of baseballs are the division EHS functions and out from there and connected to the baseballs are the division manufacturing plants with their individual EHS functions. With this approach, one can identify the EHS people who are excelling in the function and move them with the company to ensure the effective management of the EHS function.

The target audience is the middle and upper management who have responsibility to manage the EHS function at their respective companies no matter the size of the company. While I have suggested the intermediate and advanced group as participants in the webinar, those who will be carrying out this change in function will be the people who are considered basic, but they will be in need of training so that they may understand what is expected of them. These would be the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) people who are, "Hands on" in the EHS function.
It is best explained by telling a true story. There was a manufacturing plant on the west coast of the US that was having water pollution compliance problems. They contact the corporate EHS office on the east coast of the US for help. Corporate said they would send their water pollution expert to help. When the plant manager reviewed the estimated cost for the corporate expert to come to his plant he said NO. The cost for the corporate person to visit for a week that included airfare, hotel, rental car, food, his hourly cost and benefits was approximately $10,000. The plant manager phoned a local environmental company who said their cost to do the same work was about $3500. The plant manager told the corporate expert not to come and hired the local expert at about 35% of the cost. He sent the corporate office a copy of the local expert report for comment.
The story identifies that the corporate EHS office has competition, and needs to explain why they should be used instead of the far less expensive local experts. This webinar will address the corporate challenge, and what needs to be done to ensure a continued corporate EHS function.
