Strategies to increase your MIPS Performance Score and How to Achieve "Bonuses" for Exceptional Performance

Duration: 60 Minutes
If you are looking for a help with understanding how the MIPS score is determined and how your practice can achieve "bonuses" in the form of exceptional positive payment adjustments, this course is for you. We will explore how the score is generated from each MIPS performance category and how to overcome performance barriers.

Why Should you Attend
This course will review practical MIPS strategies that will allow practices to obtain the highest possible MIP performance scores. The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) gave rise to a CMS Quality Payment Program called the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). This program will adjust Medicare payments based on a performance score that will range from 0 to 100. Clinicians and groups that attain the highest MIPS performance scores in 2017 performance can earn up to a 4% positive payment adjustment. However, CMS has been directed by Congress to implement additional positive payment adjustments in addition to the standard payment adjustment from an annual recurring fund of $500,000,000. All of these funds will be used to pay exceptional MIPS performers during the first 6 years of the MIPS program. The amount each clinician or group can receive from this fund is a positive payment adjustment of up to 10%. However, it is supplemental to the standard payment adjustment (e.g., the adjustment that is maximal at +4% in 2017).

In 2017 the threshold for attaining this additional payment adjustment for exceptional performance has been set at 70 points. Practices that achieve score of greater than 70 points will receive additional positive payment adjustments. This course will explain how the MIPS score is determined and focus on comprehensive strategies that will optimize performance and MIPS scores.

Topic Background
The Merit - based Payment Incentive System (MIPS) is mandatory for the majority of clinicians in the US. It is a Quality Payment Program that rewards high-quality care at a low cost with payment adjustments. Below average care and utilization may be associated with negative payment adjustments. MIPS has an exceptional performance payment adjustment that is drawn from a pool of $500 million that will be replenished annually. CMS has been instructed by Congress to spend that entire amount each year for exceptional performers under the MIPS program. This exceptional payment adjustment can be as high as 10% per year. This is in addition to the standard payment adjustment, meaning that very high performers could see every Medicare claim increased by as much as 14% in 2019 and growing to as much as 19% in 2023 through 2025. In future years this exceptional payment adjustment will be based on average scores submitted by MIPS participants. In 2017 the performance threshold has been artificially established at 70 points. This could mean that 2017 will be a unique opportunity to achieve the exceptional performance payment.
