Topic Background
MACRA, including the MIPS and APM program, went into effect on January 1, 2017. It is the most significant change to Medicare reimbursement in several decades. Reimbursement under MACRA will tied to quality and utilization of healthcare services. MACRA has several components that overlap with Chronic Care Management services, a Medicare program that reimburses providers for providing advanced levels of care to patients with chronic medical conditions. CCM is a relatively new program that was first started in January 2015. It is optional and has not been adopted by as many providers as Medicare anticipated. It is designed to compensate providers for non-face-to-face time, including a time spent by their staff members, spent providing care for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
