How to Overcome the Five Dysfunctions of a Team

The five dysfunctions stated by Patrick Lencioni are: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results. It is significant to understand what's expected of a consistent team, measure the level up to which teams meet their expectations, form steps toward resolving a conflict and building trust, and implementing a plan to improve commitment, accountability, and results. 1. Overcoming Absence of Trust
Create an environment where honest feedback is accepted, with senior leadership setting the example of being transparent. One can overcome the absence of trust using team effectiveness checklist, personal history exercise, behavioral profiles, Myers-Briggs, DiSC, etc.
2. Overcoming Fear of Conflict
To overcome the fear of conflict the leaders allow conflict to occur and allow it to resolve itself naturally.
3. Overcoming Lack of Commitment
To overcome lack of commitment, the leader must help the group get to closure around issues, as well as adherence to schedules and deliverables that the team has set.
4. Overcoming Avoidance of Accountability
To overcome avoidance of accountability, the leader should encourage peer to peer accountability. In order to check the effectiveness of a team two questions must be asked to the team leader- What is the single most important behavioral characteristic or quality demonstrated by this team member that contributes to the strength of the team? What is the single most important behavioral characteristic or quality demonstrated by this team member that can sometimes derail the team? Meetings allow for accountability check in.
5. Overcoming Inattention to Results
The leader must set the tone for a focus on results. They must provide rewards and recognition for those who make contributions towards achieving team goals.
